This half term are studying the traditional tale of The Three Little Pigs. We all know most of the story by heart and are having great fun acting this out. Today we have started writing the story. We all produced our own sentences for the story beginning and are excited to continue to write the story during this week.
In PE we have been using The Three Little Pig story, which we have been reading in English, as inspiration for our dance.
Last week we explored different wolf movements, travelling from one space to another and then doing a low jump to look like a pounce. We thought about the gestures we could use to make ourselves look like wolves. This week, we thought about the three little pigs and how they might travel. We travelled around the room and then when we 'bumped in to' the wolf, we made a gesture to look like we were scared. The children linked the movement ideas together and created their own sequence. Here are a few photos of the children in action! To help support your child's phonics and reading ability at home; there are some brilliant games on the sites listed below. Some of the games the children will be familiar with through use in school.
www.ictgames.com/literacy.html includes lots of spellings games. www.phonicsplay.co.uk/ParentsMenu.htm a variety of games to support your child's individual phonics ability www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks1/literacy/phonics/play/ lots of games to support basic sentence structure. This week we are looking at the place value of large numbers. We have been exploring how many tens and ones are in each number. For example the number 12 has one ten and two ones; 36 is three tens and six ones. The following links are two brilliant games that you could also play at home.
http://www.ictgames.com/sharkNumbers/sharkNumbers_v5.html http://www.ictgames.com/arrowCards_revised_v6.html As part of our Paralympic Week, today Year 1 took part in a Wheelchair Basketball session. The children quickly mastered how to move forwards, backwards and turn in their wheelchairs. They then had a go at passing and shooting into the nets. As you can tell from the smiles on their faces, Year 1 had lots of fun. Thank you for the donations for our non-uniform day which helped enable the children to have this experience.
Each week your child will come home with a PenPals handwriting sheet and one piece of Topic/ Maths related homework. Homework folders will be sent home on a Friday and should be returned to school by the following Wednesday. Homework will begin on Friday 16th September.
This week we have been practicing our counting forwards and backwards with numbers between 0-20. We have been using the following songs to help our learning . Please feel free to have a listen at home. During our first full week in school each year was given a different artist to study. Our Artist in Year One was Wassily Kandinsky. We loved his abstract style paintings and have re-created our own version of 'Squares with Concentric Circles' . If you would like to see our finished piece, please feel free to pop into school after hometime on either Tuesday 27th or Wednesday 28th September.
We hope you have all had a fantastic holiday and are excited for coming back tomorrow. The classroom is all set up and ready for the morning. Where you do think you will explore first? Alfie is sat ready and waiting for lots of stories in the reading den. In the morning please say bye to your grown-up at the door and come into your new classroom. You can put your coat, PE bag and any lunch boxes in your locker. Look for your name and picture to find where your things go. You then need to collect your homework folder with your reading book and place this in your book bag. Book bags then go in the team coloured boxes. There is a box for your water bottle. Once you have done all this please sit ready for register on the carpet. There is a lot of remember so just ask if you are unsure!
This week we have had great fun with Mrs Halsley creating our own 3D shapes out of straws and playdough. The playdough made it very easy to see how may corners a shape has.
